The spring of 2006 was not unlike most in Rochester. The boat splashed down at the end of March in preparation for charters beginning mid-April. April and May were spent filling the cooler with limit catches of brown trout, rainbows, steelhead, cohos, and spring king salmon. This time of year offers rapid rod-popping action while fishing on the beach in 8-12 feet of water. Because most species of trout and salmon are all chasing bait in the warm water, when the rod fires, you never know what’s on the other end!
The summer was spent chasing kings as they worked pods of bait off-shore. This time of year can produce some beauties, as evidenced on July 9 when Brendan MacKenzie landed a beautiful 36 pound, bright-silver king. This beauty started out 250 ft. from the boat on wire line and, before we knew it, it was out 760 feet and still running. After some great work by Brendan and the whole crew, we landed his once-in-a-lifetime trophy. Summer also allows to focus on a number of species individually, whether it be kings, browns, steelhead and rainbows, or bottom-dwelling lunker lake trout.
The fall salmon fishing outside the Genesee River was excellent right through October, with bonus off-shore limit catches of steelhead and rainbow trout mixed in. Depending on what each customer wanted, we were able to focus on the trophies in-shore, or consistent tail-walking action off-shore.
As you can see, there really is no bad time to fish out of Rochester aboard the Reel Action II. Give Capt. Tom a call to discuss what time of year is best for you, and to book your dates early. Good fishing,
Capt. Tom
